Brave and Cruel and Other Stories is the third book by the English author and painter Denton Welch.A collection of short stories, it was the last publication he worked on. It was issued by Hamish Hamilton with a publication date of , but was released in January , a few days after Welch's death. It consists of the title story, virtually a novella, and by far Welch's longest completed. Denton Welch (–) wrote three novels and many short stories, journals, and poems. Born in Shanghai to an American mother and an English father, he was raised in England, and his principal ambition was to be a painter until a bicycling accident left him partially paralyzed at the age of twenty.

Denton Welch (b. in Shanghai; d. in Middle Orchard, near Kent) occupied a place in British letters between the bright young things of the twenties and the angry young men of the fifties.
